The Long Eaton & Sawley Archive

Although it is reported that a Nottingham baker called Nicholas Alvye sold his wares in the town in 1593, Long Eaton had no ancient charter for a market as Sawley did. But by the 1861 census, the Market Place was in existence, so trading must have regularly been conducted there. An official Saturday market began in 1881, with Friday being allowed as an extra day in 1922. In the centre was a lamp, with two lights. The lamp-post had two dolphins entwined half way up. Later a water tap was put in for stallholders. Items sold on the market included meat and fish, greens, flowers, plants, sweets, fish & chips, ice-cream sold by an Italian, pots and pans, books and pictures, and ointments. Punch and Judy shows were held, and the Salvation Army had an open-air meeting on Sunday evenings. The market moved to its present day site off Beaconsfield Street in 1973, but the old site is still called the Market Place. In 1980, Wednesday also became a regular market day, and later Tuesday became Flea Market day.

During the 1960's several shopping developments took place in and around the Market Place. 1966 was no exception, as land adjoining 27 Market Place became available for development. A map was produced showing the names of all the established retailers which had premises in the area surrounding the site. The site itself covered 456 sq. yds. and fronted onto the Market Place with excellent rear access from a new service road which led to a large public car park behind the site. The auctioneers handling the sale were Hallam, Brackett & co of Nottingham. The auction took place on Wednesday 27th April 1966 at 3:00pm. The site is presently occupied by Baker's Oven.
